IT procedures are mandatory documents that govern and administer the day-to-day operations of business information systems. Effective design and documentation of IT procedures can reduce the incidence of systems downtime, unauthorized access, and inadvertent disclosure of business information. IT procedures are developed inline with established IT policies to safeguard systems operations, provide the appropriate levels of information security, and operational guidelines for IT staff to follow. ISO/IEC 27001 establishes the framework for the implementation of information security management systems (ISMS), against which a business information system may be voluntarily certified. Certification on the standard assures information stakeholders the efficacy and trustworthiness, and the continual improvement on security of the business information system. Effective IT procedures are prerequisites against which selected controls of the standard are enforced.
